Thessaloniki is the capital of Macedonia and second largest city of Greece. It was first established in 316 B.C. by King Kassandros of Macedon and named after his wife, Thessaloniki, half sister of Alexander the Great. It means Victory in Thessaly. Since 1912, Thessaloniki is Greece’s second major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre, and a major transportation hub for the rest of Southeastern Europe.
Until today this beautiful city retains several roman, early-christian and byzantine monuments. White Tower has been adopted as the symbol of the city. It houses a Byzantine museum and is one of the city’s leading tourist attractions. It is not known when the tower was constructed, but it was probably around 1430. Thessaloniki is home to the Thessaloniki Film Festival and the International Trade Fair, many museums, and host to many cultural events. It also has a very active nightlife, as a 2007 New York Times article calls it "Seattle of the Balkans".
